Heating Pumps, Louisville, KY, Southern Indiana

Heat Pumps (commonly called "heating pumps") use electric energy to cost-efficiently heat a home on cold days with an outdoor compressor unit which looks like an air-conditioning unit, and which actually does serve to cool the home on hot days as well. So, a heat pump warms the home in the Winter, and cools the home in Summer. Heat pump technology can be confusing, especially to home owners accustomed to gas heating, as there is no "furnace" involved, and as the system pulls heat energy from  the air on cold days to heat the home. Despite the historical skepticism, people are warming to the reliability of heat pumps for savings, comfort and environmental benefits, as heat pumps are now outselling gas furnaces, especially in milder winter climates; According the IEA, heat pump sales increased another 11% in 2022, globally.

In heating mode, a heat pump transfers outdoor heat energy (even in cold temperatures) to the indoor space; In cooling mode, it operates in reverse, like an air-conditioner, to move heat from indoors to outdoors. In sustained, extreme cold temperatures, heating can be boosted, either by electric "heat strips", or with a gas-fired furnace/booster in a "dual-fuel" system. Prolonged use of heat strips can cost more than gas heating, but installing a gas-fired boosting furnace will cost more at the time of installation. If you have an existing gas furnace, it could be used as the booster system for a heat pump. What to do? The decision comes down to a consultation with the home owner, factoring average winter temperatures, the local costs of electric and gas energy, comfort preferences, and of course, budget.

Geothermal Heating, Louisville, KY, Southern Indiana

Geothermal heating is basically the same electric heating technology as a heat pump system, except heat energy is pulled from deep in the ground instead of the air. The main benefit of geothermal heating is that the ground temperature remains much more stable than air temperature, so there would be much less need (if any) for "boosting" heating on extremely cold days. Geothermal heat is therefore more expensive to install than an air-based heat pump, but will cost less to heat your home during extended periods of extreme cold.

As with air-based Heat Pumps, the Geothermal system also uses the outdoor compressor unit to be an Air Conditioner in the Summer. The stable ground temperature (compared to air temperatures) also helps to keep the cooling costs lower. In other words, the ground temperature is cooler than the air in the summer, and warmer than the air in the winter, so a Geothermal system needs to use less energy (therefore at lower costs) to make your home comfortable in both the Winter and Summer, no matter how extreme the temperatures are.

There are several Types of Geothermal Heat Pump Systems that could work for the Louisville, KY and Southern Indiana area, since our climate is moderate, but can experience extreme temperatures, and has a wide variety of soil types.
